On the whole very good
03 October 2014  |

This is a good DVD, I enjoyed it immensely.
Shows what a simple and hugely enjoyable method spider fishing can be, especially early season. Demonstrates nicely the technique of fishing across stream, dead drift, allowing your flies to rise as they swing round slowly.

Easy flies to tie and this was shown very well.

The dry fly was of less interest to me but still very enjoyable.

So why 4* and not 5*?
Well a couple of reasons.

No demonstration of the oldest method of spider fishing ie. upstream. This was a very disappointing omission.
Id also liked to have seen a little more fishing, perhaps on another day. The DVD is only 87 mins long so on the short side.

Would I recommend it? Definately

To the point

What can I say guys, excellent DVD which is informative and to the point. I personally learnt what I needed to know within the first 5mins, because of the clear instructions from John. If you're looking for something on how to fish the wet fly, then look no further, it's worth every penny.
BTW, be prepared to have sore checks after viewing it, it's a good laugh to boot.

Christmas gift
29 December 2009  |

Received this DVD as a Christmas present, and must say, it's fantastic!
Very well shot, the skills captured are spot on, and it's nice to see the presenters enjoying themselves and sharing a little banter with one another.

I've already recommended this to a few friends, but mine will be staying nice and safe in my collection.
Top marks to JT, Deano, and the rest of the Fish On team! Very well done. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Instructional and fun
10 January 2009  |

I received John Tyzack's “Early season trout fishing" for Xmas as well, In my view it gets the balance just right between being instructional but still keeping that sense of banter-fun that you get with two mates fishing together. Looks like it was great fun to make. Well worth picking up a copy.

Superb
15 October 2008  |

I’ve just purchased the Fish ON productions DVD “Early Season Trout Fishing” and it is superb.
No frenetic music or screaming and yelling, just a couple of guys (John Tyzack and Dean Andrews) fishing a river and explaining what they are doing and why.

There are short and succinct sections on basic entomology, fly selection to match the hatch, tackle and leader make up but it is predominantly a fishing DVD.

Very professionally filmed it is entertaining and instructional and I think it is a must see for any budding or improving river man.
